Future Fossils - the mystery of the Anthropocene

Have you ever heard of Shrimpis pyromanis, or Wisserius antarctus? Probably not, as these are fossils from a distant future. They are the result of centuries of petrification of the waste of our modern era, the Anthropocene. Nobody recognizes these items when they are recoverd in 100,000 years. A watering can is interpreted as a head, and a windscreen wiper is judged to be a wing. Future paleontologists thus develop a completely distorted image of the world we currently live in and the animals we share it with.

Future Fossils was developed by Walter van der Velden and Aart Kuipers. The exhibition shows the consequences of our constant need for new items and the permanent traces that leaves on our planet. A seemingly classical display of fossils turns out to be something quite different. The exhibition lasts until 8 January 2023.
